Product Details
Norton 1601 1600 Series Adjustable Hydraulic Door Closer
Norton 1601 is a 1600 Series surface-mounted hydraulic door closer for compatible commercial interior and exterior doors. Its adjustable spring power, separate closing-speed controls, and non-handed design allow the closer to be configured for the required door and mounting arrangement.
The standard 1601 is a non-hold-open model. Norton’s Tri-Style configuration supports regular arm, top jamb, and parallel arm installation when the door, frame, clearance, and mounting hardware meet the applicable installation requirements.

Adjustable Closing Control
The spring-power adjustment sets the closer's closing force. The sweep-speed adjustment controls the main closing movement, while the latch-speed adjustment controls the final portion as the door approaches its closed position.
Backcheck provides cushioning during opening. It is not a hold-open feature or a substitute for a suitable door stop. Correct adjustment must balance controlled movement with reliable closing and latching.
Three Mounting Configurations
- Regular Arm: A pull-side arrangement with the closer body mounted on the door.
- Top Jamb: An arrangement with the closer body mounted on the frame above the door.
- Parallel Arm: A push-side arrangement using the appropriate parallel-arm bracket.
Use the template for the selected mounting method. Frame depth, door top-rail space, overhead clearance, and arm geometry determine whether additional brackets or mounting plates are needed. The mounting-hole dimensions listed above describe the closer body only, not the complete installation layout.
Before You Order
- Confirm the model: Match Norton 1601 and check any additional markings, option suffixes, or finish codes on the original closer and replacement package.
- Identify the installation: Determine whether the existing closer uses regular arm, top jamb, or parallel arm mounting.
- Compare the hardware: Check the closer-body hole spacing, arm, mounting shoe, bracket, and available clearance.
- Review the door requirements: Confirm door width, construction, operating conditions, and the required closing force.
- Check the complete configuration: Do not assume that every 1600 Series closer has the same spring range, arm function, or included accessories.
For a walk-in cooler or freezer door, confirm suitability with the door or equipment manufacturer. The Norton name, a similar appearance, or the 1600 Series designation alone does not establish compatibility with a particular refrigerated-door assembly.
When to Inspect the Existing Closer
Have the closer and door assembly inspected if the door slams, closes inconsistently, stops before latching, or shows visible fluid leakage. Also check for loose mounting screws, damaged arm joints, and movement at the mounting bracket.
Inspect the hinges, latch alignment, seals, and door movement before replacing the closer. Binding or misalignment should be corrected rather than masked by increasing closing force.
Installation and Adjustment
Use a qualified installer and follow the Norton instructions for the exact model and mounting arrangement. Verify that the door and frame provide suitable reinforcement and that the selected fasteners are appropriate for their construction.
Do not install the standard closer on the exposed weather side of an exterior door. Follow the manufacturer's adjustment limits, never force the regulating valves out of the body, and never completely close the backcheck valve. Keep hands clear of the spring-loaded arm during installation and adjustment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Norton 1600 and Norton 1601?
1600 identifies the product series. Model 1601 identifies the adjustable-spring closer within that family. Other models and arm configurations have different specifications.
What does adjustable size 1–6 mean?
It describes the spring-power adjustment range, not door thickness or mounting-hole size. Select the setting using the manufacturer's instructions and the actual door requirements.
Can it be installed on left- and right-swing doors?
Yes. The standard 1601 is non-handed. The arm and mounting hardware must still be positioned correctly for the door swing and installation method.
Is this only a top-mounted door closer?
No. The standard Tri-Style configuration supports regular arm, top jamb, and parallel arm installations when the required clearances and hardware are suitable.
Does the standard 1601 hold the door open?
No. The standard 1601 is a non-hold-open model. Do not assume a hold-open arm or other optional function is included.
Does the backcheck adjustment replace a door stop?
No. Backcheck cushions opening movement. Use the appropriate door stop and follow the manufacturer's installation requirements.
Will this fit any walk-in cooler or freezer door?
No universal fit is established. Verify the door manufacturer's requirements, mounting arrangement, arm clearance, closing force, and operating environment before selecting it for a refrigerated-door application.
Does a slamming door always require a new closer?
No. Incorrect adjustment, loose hardware, binding hinges, or door misalignment should also be investigated. Visible leakage or damaged closer components require professional assessment.
